SAT

There has been much attention to the changes made to the SAT format. Stripped off all it's hype and hullabaloo, the changes are not all that drastic. The Analogies and Quantitative Comparisons have been dropped, a bit of Algebra II has been added. Also, there are more short reading passages and more attention paid to fiction and fiction-related questions. But the biggest change - and the reason you are reading this - is the addition of a short essay writing component to the SAT.

That's right! You now have just 25 minutes with which to compose a cogent and compelling essay in response to a given prompt. Now, I know what you're thinking - Me, write an essay in 25 minutes on an unknown topic, with no preparation! Who the hell came up with such an idea? Where does the College Board get it's employees - the Marquis de Sade Finishing School for Educational Sadists?! But relax, the essay is easier to write than you realize and Essay Advantage is here to help.

First of all, you will not be expected to turn in a polished essay at the end of your 25 minutes. Instead, think of your SAT essay as a first draft on an essay that will see many revisions. That isn't to say that you can afford to be sloppy with your essay. But it does mean that with a bit of practice and a thorough understanding of how your essay will be graded, you can master the new SAT essay!

Given the short amount of time you have to complete your essay as well as the fact that you will be writing on an unknown topic, it is important to keep in mind that WHAT you write is less important than HOW WELL you organize and express your thoughts. That is why Essay Advantage's unique five category evaluation will allow you to tame the SAT essay beast. The five categories your essay will be graded on are:

  1. Grammar/Usage - correct application of the rules of grammar. Also, correct use of words.
  2. Clarity of Expression - do your ideas come across clearly or are they garbled and confused?
  3. Continuity/Focus - does your essay stay on message or wander off into uncharted territory?
  4. Logic/Cohesion - is your essay consistently supported by logic and does it make sense?
  5. Reasoning/Evidence - is your argument made reasonable by a sufficient amount of evidence and examples?

There really is only one way to improve your ability to write quickly and clearly - practice. But what good is practice without someone critiquing and evaluating your work? That is why you need the editing professionals at Essay Advantage. You can rely on our experience in helping you earn the top score on the College Board's new essay grading system. Get your SAT essay critiqued and evaluated by our editing professionals. You receive a complete analysis of your essay featuring a detailed five category evaluation with suggestions for improvement.
